Up, Up and Away

QantasLink is the carrier servicing Lord Howe Island with a year round almost daily schedule. It is important to highlight that the aircraft used is a Dash-8 Turbo Prop so there are strict baggage limits, one checked bag of 14kg and 7kg of carry-on luggage. This weight restriction means you need to pack smart rather than taking everything including the kitchen sink. We recommend packing light layers should you feel the chill in the evenings rather than heavy knitwear and coats. You can leave the hairdryer at home and save space in your suitcase as most properties supply this along with bathroom amenities. And if you are thinking of hitting the golf ball around the green know that the local golf club includes club hire in their social game rates!

Getting About

Travelling around the island is safe and easy. You are met on arrival at the airport by your accommodation hosts to be transported to the property and they will return you to the airport in time for your departing flight. Many of the properties also provide transfers in the evening to local restaurants should you wish to eat out instead of staying in cooking. During the day the limited road network is shared by walkers, cyclists and the few cars actually on the island, so you can wander to nearby shops, restaurants and beaches without fear of traffic. We suggest doing as the locals do and hiring a bicycle and helmet then set off to explore the island as you please.

While on the island be sure to call into the local boutiques and shops to see the range of locally made and island inspired hats, clothing, artwork and crafts. Maybe purchase something for yourself as a reminder of your time on the island or a gift for a loved one. It will be a one of a kind purchase that no one else can say they have and you get to support the local community at the same time.

If you are a keen golfer or just an occasional hitter then be sure to try a round at the Lord Howe Island Golf Club. The course has one of the most unique backdrops you will encounter with views that are second to none. Plus, in addition to the usual course traps of sand and water, this course follows the coastal cliff so beware of hitting your ball straight off the island itself! Plan Ahead

Due to the limited bedding on the island, only 400 guests can stay on the island at any one time, and the fact that many of the properties on the island close over the winter months, it is a destination you need to look at booking in advance. We are able to book your room up to 12 months in advance, while the airfares can be booked up to 9 months in advance of your travel dates. Occasionally you may be fortunate to grab some last minute availability but be warned the price of the stay will reflect the limited nature of these types of bookings!
